Volunteer

March 5th, 2010

Volunteer opportunities include the following.

Grow vegetables for the hungry.
This is the basic Plant a Row mission. Gardeners can deliver donations to the pantry any Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday morning, at 603 Mount Salem Avenue in Washington. Call Mimi Forbes, manager, at 675-1177.

Volunteer at the pantry.
Morning volunteers unload the supply van, stock shelves, recycle cardboard, and generally get ready for clients. Afternoon volunteers work with our clients. To volunteer, call Kathy Eggers at 987-7208, or Mimi at the pantry: 675-1177

Donate nonperishable items.
The food bank does not supply dairy products (milk, eggs, cheese, butter) or staples like peanut butter, jam/jelly, coffee, canned meats, cooking oil, ketchup, mustard, pancake mix, syrup, or pet foods. These are always welcome.

Volunteer at the Hoop House for the Hungry.
Plant a Row and the Montessori Farm School in Flint Hill are growing vegetables year round in a hoop house at the school. Gardeners are needed to work with the vegetables and the students. Call Jules Conn, Master Gardener, at 937-2059.

Mentor novice gardeners.
The Headwaters Farm to Table program will help families start vegetable gardens on their own property. If you are an experienced gardener, call Trista Scheuerlein, Farm-to-Table Program Director, to volunteer: 987-3322

Be a volunteer driver.
From time to time, someone is needed to deliver food to a shut-in, pick up a box of groceries from Sperryville, or meat from Front Royal, or extra supplies from Warrenton. Call Kathy Eggers at 987-7208.
